Social Entrepreneurship

What’s the difference between a Social Enterprise and Social Entrepreneurship?

In this short video, Daniela Papi Thornton from Oxford’s Saïd Business School, talks about reclaiming Social Entrepreneurship.  She believes we have mis-directed our young leaders by promoting Social Enterprise as the only solution to global and local, social change. She makes a great case and suggests a rethink about the way we teach, fund, equip and incentivise social entrepreneurs.

She offers a tool, the ‘Impact Gaps Canvas’, to help us shift from early solution focus, to really learn and understand the problems we are passionate about solving, before we move into solution mode.

So, what problems do you care about passionately? Have you experienced the problem directly? Can you create opportunities to deepen your understanding of the problem?  Can you create opportunities to broaden your awareness of the impact and implications of the problem, through time, and across different contexts? What other systems are impacted by this problem? And what other systems might be a target for a more ‘systemically ecological’ solution?

Lots of food for thought here about the kind of leadership the world needs now.
